Types of hard hat and when to use them

"Hard hat" covers three quite different pieces of kit that are not interchangeable: an industrial safety helmet, a height-safety helmet and a bump cap. Each is built to a different standard and guards against a different hazard. Fitting the wrong one to a job is a common and serious mistake, so here is how they differ and when each belongs.

The three main types

Industrial safety helmet — EN 397

The standard hard hat. Designed to protect against objects falling from above, which is the dominant head hazard on most sites. Its chin strap (where fitted) is designed to release under load to avoid a strangulation risk if the helmet is caught. The right choice for general construction and groundworks.

Height-safety helmet — EN 12492

Originally a mountaineering standard, now widely specified for work at height and rope access. It adds side-impact protection and a stronger chin strap designed to keep the helmet on during a fall — the opposite intent to the EN 397 strap. Specified where a fall, not just a dropped object, is the risk.

Bump cap — EN 812

Not a substitute for a hard hat. A bump cap protects against knocking your head on fixed objects — cuts, scrapes and bumps in low-headroom areas. It does not protect against falling objects. Use it only where the sole risk is a stationary obstruction.

Variants for specific hazards

Within EN 397 industrial helmets, optional features are certified and marked individually — specify the ones the job needs:

  • Electrical work — helmets marked for 440 V a.c. electrical insulation, for work near live low-voltage conductors. These are non-vented, since vents would defeat the insulation.
  • Molten metal (MM) — for foundry and hot-work environments where molten metal splash is a risk.
  • High and low temperature — helmets rated to remain effective at very high (+150 °C) or very low (down to −30 °C) temperatures.
  • Lateral deformation (LD) — extra resistance to side crushing, useful where there is a risk of the head being pinched rather than struck from above.

Vented or non-vented? Vented shells are cooler for hot, dry work — but vents must not be used for electrical work or where splash or spray can enter. Match ventilation to the hazard, not just to comfort.

Reduced-peak helmets give better upward vision, which suits crane and plant operators, scaffolders and steel erectors who spend time looking up.

Colour, comfort and accessories

Helmet colour is often used on site to identify roles — but the colour convention is set by the site or contractor, not by the standard, so always follow the site rule. A comfortable helmet is one that gets worn: look at the harness (a wheel-ratchet adjuster is easier than a slip fit), sweatbands, and compatibility with the eye and hearing protection that has to be worn with it, so the combination works as a set. When to replace a helmet

A helmet is a limited-life item. The shell degrades with UV exposure over time even if it is never struck, so check the moulded date stamp inside the shell against the manufacturer's stated replacement interval, and replace the harness on its own shorter cycle. Retire any helmet immediately after a significant impact, or if the shell is cracked, crazed or has been drilled or painted with anything the maker has not approved — solvents in some paints and stickers can weaken the shell.
