Variants for specific hazards
Within EN 397 industrial helmets, optional features are certified and
marked individually — specify the ones the job needs:
- Electrical work — helmets marked for 440 V a.c. electrical insulation, for work near live low-voltage conductors. These are non-vented, since vents would defeat the insulation.
- Molten metal (MM) — for foundry and hot-work environments where molten metal splash is a risk.
- High and low temperature — helmets rated to remain effective at very high (+150 °C) or very low (down to −30 °C) temperatures.
- Lateral deformation (LD) — extra resistance to side crushing, useful where there is a risk of the head being pinched rather than struck from above.
Vented or non-vented? Vented shells are cooler for
hot, dry work — but vents must not be used for electrical work or
where splash or spray can enter. Match ventilation to the hazard, not
just to comfort.
Reduced-peak helmets give better upward vision, which
suits crane and plant operators, scaffolders and steel erectors who
spend time looking up.
