Do I need a face fit test?

If you wear a tight-fitting mask at work, yes. Face fit testing applies to every tight-fitting facepiece, from a disposable FFP3 to a full face respirator, and the result belongs to one named person wearing one specific make, model and size of mask. It is not a certificate that travels to a different mask.

The HSE guidance is INDG479. The reasoning is simple: a filtering facepiece only reaches its rated performance if air goes through the filter rather than round the edge of the seal. Faces differ and masks differ, so the only way to know a combination seals is to test it.

  • Fit testing is per person and per mask model and size. Passing on one manufacturer's FFP3 says nothing about another manufacturer's FFP3.
  • Only tight-fitting facepieces need a fit test. Loose-fitting powered hoods and helmets do not rely on a face seal.
  • The wearer must be clean shaven where the mask seals. Stubble or a beard crossing the sealing surface prevents the seal forming.
  • Qualitative testing is a taste or smell pass or fail, for half masks only. Quantitative testing counts particles, gives a numerical fit factor and covers full face masks too.
  • HSE guidance is INDG479. The Fit2Fit scheme is a voluntary way of demonstrating the tester is competent.

Which masks need a fit test, and which do not

The dividing line is whether the equipment depends on a seal against skin.

  • Tight-fitting, so fit testing applies: disposable filtering facepieces to EN 149 (FFP1, FFP2, FFP3), reusable half masks and full face masks.
  • Loose-fitting, so not fit tested in the same way: powered hoods, helmets and visors that deliver filtered air into a loose enclosure.

That distinction belongs at the procurement stage rather than on test day, because it changes the budget. A powered loose-fitting unit costs considerably more per head than a box of disposables, but it works for wearers who cannot pass a fit test and removes the retest burden that comes with changing mask models.

Qualitative and quantitative testing

  • Qualitative (QLFT) is a pass or fail based on whether the wearer can taste or smell a test agent introduced into a hood while performing set exercises. It suits half masks, including disposable FFP types, and relies on the wearer's senses, so a sensitivity screening step comes first.
  • Quantitative (QNFT) measures particle concentrations inside and outside the mask and produces a numerical fit factor. It works for half masks and full face masks, and gives a figure you can record rather than a subjective judgement.

Either way, the test must use the actual mask the person will wear at work, and the wearer should fit it themselves so the test also confirms they can put it on correctly unaided.

Facial hair, and what to do when shaving is not an option

HSE is unambiguous: wearers of tight-fitting facepieces must be clean shaven in the region of the face seal whenever the mask is worn at work. Stubble is enough to break the seal, and a test should not proceed if hair crosses the sealing surface, because a pass obtained that way describes nothing that happens on site.

Where facial hair cannot or will not be removed, the answer is not a bigger mask or a tighter strap. It is loose-fitting powered RPE with a hood, helmet or visor, which does not depend on a face seal. Treat that as a planning decision with a cost attached.

What FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 actually mean

EN 149 covers filtering half masks against particles, in three ascending classes, each with a minimum filtering efficiency, a maximum total inward leakage and a UK assigned protection factor (APF).

  • FFP1 - filters at least 80% of airborne particles, up to 22% total inward leakage, APF 4.
  • FFP2 - at least 94%, up to 8% leakage, APF 10.
  • FFP3 - at least 99%, up to 2% leakage, APF 20.

An APF of 20 means the mask, correctly selected, fitted and worn, reduces exposure to about a twentieth of the concentration in the surrounding air. The leakage figures assume a seal that has been demonstrated, not assumed.

On the mask itself, NR means non-reusable, single shift use only, R means reusable across more than one shift, and D means it passed the dolomite dust clogging test. One limitation is worth repeating: FFP masks protect against particles only. They do nothing against solvent vapour or gases, which need a filter cartridge respirator chosen from the COSHH assessment.

When to retest

HSE does not set a single fixed expiry date. It expects a system for reviewing when a repeat test is needed, and a retest whenever something changes that could affect the seal:

  • the mask model, type or size changes, including a switch to another manufacturer's equivalent;
  • significant weight loss or gain, dental work, or facial surgery or injury;
  • natural change over time, which is why many employers run a periodic review cycle.

The first has the biggest procurement consequence. Changing respirator brand mid-project on price invalidates every fit test for that mask and sends the workforce back through testing. The saving is almost always smaller than the cost of retesting, so set mask standardisation early and hold it.

Common questions

Do I need a separate fit test for every mask model?

Yes. A fit test result applies to one person wearing one specific make, model and size of tight-fitting facepiece. Passing on one manufacturer's FFP3 tells you nothing about another's, because the sealing surface differs. Changing brand, model or size means the affected wearers must be tested again on the new mask.

How long does a face fit test last?

HSE does not set a fixed expiry period. It expects employers to review when a repeat test is needed, and to retest when circumstances change: a different mask model or size, significant weight change, dental work, or facial surgery or injury. Many employers run a periodic review cycle so natural facial change is picked up.

Can I be fit tested with a beard or stubble?

No. Tight-fitting RPE needs an unbroken seal against skin, so wearers must be clean shaven where the mask seals whenever it is worn at work. Testing should not proceed if hair crosses the sealing surface. Where shaving is not an option, use loose-fitting powered RPE, which does not depend on a face seal.

Do FFP3 masks protect against fumes and solvent vapours?

No. EN 149 filtering facepieces protect against particles only, whatever their class. Solvent, paint and fuel work needs a respirator with the correct gas or vapour filter cartridge, chosen from the COSHH assessment for that substance. Selecting an FFP3 because it is the highest particle class gives no protection against a vapour.
